Smosh is a sketch comedy brand founded in 2002 by Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla (who left the brand in 2017 and returned in 2023), with its famed YouTube channel created three years later. They were later joined by an ensemble cast since 2015 that includes Courtney Miller, Shayne Topp, Damien Haas, Keith Leak Jr., Olivia Sui, Noah Grossman, Kimmy Jimenez and Jacklyn Uweh. Aside from their main sketch comedy channel, it also includes channels dedicated to improv/non-scripted (Smosh Pit), gaming (Smosh Games) and podcast (SmoshCast), as well as two films, a live tour and merchandise through its own dedicated store. Smosh has been regarded as the largest sketch comedy brand on YouTube and its main channel has become the most-subscribed on the platform multiple times, the last one being held in 2013 before they were eventually overtaken by PewDiePie in August of that year.

Acquisition by Mythical Entertainment[]

On February 22, 2019, it was announced that Smosh and its sister channels were acquired by Rhett & Link's Mythical Entertainment from the creditors of Smosh's former parent company, Defy Media, which controversially ceased operations without warning in November 2018. This marked the company as the largest in the world in YouTube comedy with over 75 million subscribers and 25 billion views. With this, Smosh now works from the Mythical office in Burbank, California. Rhett and Link themselves announced their acquisition of Smosh in an episode of Let's Talk About That on March 2, 2019. Link stated that they would give the Smosh cast and crew greater creative freedom and responsibility to design the future of the brand in their vision. Since then, they have appeared occasionally in various videos across.

Among the acquisitions made on Smosh by Mythical were the full channel and intellectual property of The Warp Zone, a sister channel of Smosh that were also affected by the collapse of Defy Media. Afterwards, Mythical gave back control of the Warp Zone to its original creators Michael Davis, Brian Fisher, David Odom, Michael Schroeder, and Ryan Tellez.[1]

On June 20, 2023, it was announced that Mythical sold Smosh back to its original co-founders, Ian and Anthony, while retaining a minority stake. Rhett and Link will continue to be involved with Smosh in an advisory capacity.
